How Brands Weave Into Our Lives

I’ve always been a bit of a detail person, especially when it comes to the people and brands I love. I can often recall exactly where I met a friend, what they were doing, and even what day it was in August. And with brands, it’s no different.

Admittedly, I’m a bit of a fangirl when it comes to brands I admire. I cheer them on from the sidelines, but it’s more than just admiration. It’s about how these brands intertwine with my life, growing alongside me, and becoming part of my story.

Yesterday, I had separate conversations with two amazing women behind brands I often see at markets, including Kamers/Makers. That got me thinking about Kamers – my ultimate brand crush!

For years, I’ve dreamed of one day being a Kamers Maker. I don’t know exactly what I’d create – well, I have a thousand ideas – but nothing that doesn’t require mastering a whole new skill first! Still, the dream remains.

Why Kamers, though? Because it’s more than just a market. It’s the vibe, the bubbles, the shopping, the sense of community and festivity. But most of all, it’s the thrill of discovering, celebrating, and supporting beautiful local brands.

My Journey with Kamers

My first Kamers experience was back in 2016 with my aunt. We sipped champagne, indulged in Pierre Jourdan ice lollies (do they still make those?), and shopped our hearts out. I bought a Peppertree leather bag that I still use today and a brandy-and-coke lollipop that I took home for my now-husband.

Since then, Kamers has been part of so many special moments and precious memories with people I love. I have also collected so many of my favourite things there, from Emerging Creatives bedside lamps to the octopus prints in my bathroom, leaf prints in the spare room and a Winnie the Pooh quote in my son’s room. I bought my son’s first baby grow from Homegrown Africa there, and so many Tday mugs I’ve lost count. 

During the pandemic, I shopped their online store, buying an oil burner and bathroom mirror. And who could forget the gin from Mirari that carried me through the early COVID days? Clothes, décor, shoes, pickles, olives, mugs – ’ve walked a journey with Kamers without them even knowing it.

The Impact of Brands

This makes me wonder; do brands realise the impact they have on people’s lives? It might feel like “just shopping” or “just a market,” but what you do enriches lives in ways you may never know.

While reflecting on this, I realised something about myself. I’ve been so caught up in trying to find a craft to “make” something, I forgot about my main skill: storytelling.

In high school, I wrote novels, children’s books, and short stories (just for fun). Somewhere along the way, I shifted from storytelling to marketing. But my passion has always been telling stories, and I’m ready to embrace that again.

So here’s the plan: I’m going to start sharing stories about my journey with my favourite brands and businesses – the ones that inspire me, like Kamers. I hope these stories resonate with you.
